Stunning Photos Show Fog Rolling into Basel, Switzerland, in January 1970

Basel is Switzerland’s third-largest city by population, sitting in the Rhine valley at a geographic crossroads where three countries meet. France lies to the west, Germany to the north, and Switzerland surrounds the city on its remaining sides. Three major mountain ranges frame Basel’s horizon: the Vosges Mountains in France, the Black Forest in Germany, and the Jura Mountains to the south and west. That geography does more than shape the view — it directly controls the weather.

As autumn shifts into winter, Basel experiences wide swings in daily temperature. Midday can bring genuine warmth, while nights drop sharply into the cold. That contrast sets the stage for fog. In the Rhine valley, fog typically settles in and lingers far longer than it does inside the city itself — a pattern that becomes especially pronounced between November and January.

Basel’s early morning fog has a natural enemy: the Möhlin-Jet. This is a south-easterly wind system produced by the specific shape of the Rhine valley on the city’s eastern side. The topography funnels air in a way that pushes fog out of the city, often clearing the streets before the rest of the valley has seen any change. On the days the Möhlin-Jet fails to arrive, the fog holds its ground.

January 1970 gave photographers a front-row seat to Basel’s fog at its thickest. The images captured that month show the city muffled under a dense, grey blanket. Streets, bridges, and buildings dissolve into the mist just a short distance from the camera lens.

The railway station appears in several of the photos, its familiar structure barely visible through the low visibility conditions. Train stations in fog carry a particular atmosphere — arrivals and departures happening at the edges of what the eye can follow.

The photos below, labeled in German as “Basel im Nebel” — Basel in Fog — continue the series from the same January 1970 event. The German captions reflect the city’s linguistic character; Basel sits in the German-speaking part of Switzerland and has carried both French and German names throughout its history.

What these photographs preserve is a very specific kind of winter day in a city defined by its valley setting. The mountains that make Basel’s landscape so distinctive are also responsible for trapping cold air and moisture at ground level, producing the very scenes captured here.
