David Bowie with his wife Angie Bowie and their Son Zowie in Amsterdam in 1974

In February 1974, David Bowie arrived in Amsterdam with his wife Angie and their young son Zowie, who would later go by his given name, Duncan Jones. The family was photographed at the Amstel Hotel, one of the city’s most iconic luxury addresses. Bowie was deep in one of the most productive and restless periods of his career, and these images offer a rare glimpse into his domestic life away from the stage.

David Bowie and Angela Barnett first met in April 1969. They married within a year, and Angie quickly became a significant force in shaping Bowie’s public image and career direction during the early 1970s. By the time these Amsterdam photos were taken, the couple had been married for nearly four years and Zowie was still a toddler.

The marriage, by Angie’s own account, was never built on conventional romantic love. In her memoir, written after the gag order from their divorce agreement expired, she described it plainly as a marriage of convenience. She stated she married so she could work, and recalled that Bowie told her before the wedding, “I’m not really in love with you” — a fact she said she found acceptable at the time.

Despite the nature of their arrangement, the two remained married for over a decade and navigated one of rock music’s most chaotic and creative eras together. Angie was present for the rise of Ziggy Stardust, the Aladdin Sane period, and the Diamond Dogs era — all of which unfolded in quick succession around the time of these Amsterdam photographs.

The marriage ended on 8 February 1980 in Switzerland. The divorce was described as turbulent, and the settlement included a gag order that prevented Angie from publicly discussing their relationship for a set period. When that order eventually expired, she gave a detailed and candid account of their years together. Bowie was awarded custody of Zowie following the split.

Zowie, raised largely by his father after the divorce, grew up to become the acclaimed film director Duncan Jones. He directed the science fiction films Moon (2009) and Source Code (2011), building a career entirely on his own terms. In these 1974 photographs at the Amstel Hotel, he is barely three years old, perched in what was then one of the most famous households in rock music.
