Before Modern Bridal Trends: A Close Look at Bridesmaids’ Styles in the 1940s

Bridesmaid fashion in the 1940s was not driven by trend forecasters or bridal magazines. It was driven by the United States government. When America entered World War II, fabric became a controlled resource, and that reality showed up in every wedding photograph taken between 1941 and 1945.

The War Production Board issued Limitation Order L-85, which set strict rules on how much fabric a manufacturer could use in a single garment. For bridesmaids, this meant hemlines that fell just below the knee. Flowing, full skirts were out. The silhouette became sharp and structured. Heavy shoulder pads gave dresses a boxy, military-inspired shape. High necklines and short, puffed sleeves kept fabric use to a minimum while still looking formal.

The materials inside those dresses changed just as much as the shapes. The military claimed all available silk for parachutes and powder bags, leaving none for the bridal party. Rayon stepped in as the go-to replacement. It carried a similar sheen to silk but felt heavier and moved differently on the body. It also took dye well, which opened the door to bold color choices. Dusty rose, cornflower blue, and mustard yellow were all popular options during the war years.

Velvet appeared at winter weddings, though designers used it sparingly. The cost kept it confined mostly to bodices or trim rather than full skirts. Because rayon dresses were cut simply and built to last, many women dyed them black or navy after the wedding and wore them as cocktail attire. Nothing went to waste.

Fabric rationing applied to clothing, but millinery supplies were not subject to the same rules. Bridesmaids responded by piling elaborate headwear on top of their plain gowns. Wide-brimmed hats tilted to one side appeared in wedding photo after wedding photo from this era. Juliet caps — small mesh pieces fitted to the back of the head and decorated with faux pearls or glass beads — were another common choice.

Floral crowns made from wax flowers or stiffened fabric framed the face and added softness that the dress itself lacked. Short veils attached directly to these headpieces gave the whole look more volume and drama without requiring extra yards of cloth. The hat became the visual centerpiece when the dress legally could not be.

The war ended in 1945, but bridal fashion did not shift overnight. The real turning point came in 1947 when Christian Dior launched what the press called the “New Look.” It was a direct rejection of wartime austerity. Skirts dropped from the knee to the ankle and became enormous, built from yards of taffeta or satin. The squared, padded shoulders disappeared. Soft, rounded lines and cinched waists took their place.

Bridesmaid gowns followed that same shift. The practical dark tones of the war years gave way to mint green and lilac. Full, romantic ballgown silhouettes replaced the boxy rayon shifts. By the close of the 1940s, a wedding party looked nothing like it had at the start of the decade. The two halves of the 1940s produced two completely different versions of what a bridesmaid was supposed to look like.

What tied both halves together was the resourcefulness of the women wearing those dresses. Whether working within strict government limits or embracing newfound fabric freedom, bridesmaids in the 1940s adapted to the world around them and dressed accordingly.
