In 1985, Andy Warhol had his camera out for a night in New York City that brought together some of the most recognizable names in art and music. The evening produced a rare set of photographs featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat, Madonna, Keith Haring, Fab 5 Freddy, and Futura 2000 — shot across two locations: Radio City Music Hall and Iso restaurant on 11th Street and Second Avenue.
The night started at Radio City Music Hall, where Warhol caught Madonna’s concert. He took a cab over for $6. In his diary, he was direct about what he saw: “The show was great. Just so simple and sexy and Madonna is so pretty. Now she’s thinner and just so great.” It wasn’t a polished review — it was a personal reaction from someone watching a performer at the top of her game.
After the show, Warhol and his company headed downstairs to a private party held on the level near the ladies’ room. Madonna came down with Jean-Michel Basquiat, who had gone backstage earlier. She mentioned she was thinking about heading to the Palladium and possibly stopping by Keith Haring’s dinner. Warhol noted she was “so sweet and nice” — an impression that carried into the rest of the night.
The group eventually made their way to Iso, a restaurant on 11th Street and Second Avenue. Madonna arrived separately, pulling up in a truck. The staff were overwhelmed — Warhol wrote that “the waiters were on the floor.” She was seated next to Warhol himself.
At the dinner table, the mood was loose and playful. The group teased Madonna about her false eyelashes, joking that they were bigger than Louise Nevelson’s — a reference to the sculptor known for her dramatic, heavily made-up appearance. Madonna took it well. At one point she started drawing cocks on Futura 2000’s pants, a detail Warhol recorded without comment, as was his style.
The gathering was a cross-section of New York’s art and music worlds in a single room. Basquiat was already a major figure in the downtown art scene. Keith Haring’s work was plastered across subway stations and gallery walls. Futura 2000 had moved from graffiti train cars to fine art canvases. Fab 5 Freddy connected hip-hop culture to the art world and had appeared in Blondie’s “Rapture” video. And Madonna, that same year, was promoting “Like a Virgin” and becoming a global phenomenon.
Warhol photographed all of them. He had been keeping his diary since 1976, dictating entries to his secretary Pat Hackett over the phone each morning. The entries captured the texture of his social life with blunt, unfiltered detail — cab fares, crowd reactions, offhand compliments. The 1985 entry about that night is a prime example: specific, immediate, and entirely without sentimentality.
What Warhol’s camera recorded that night was a slice of New York at a specific cultural moment — downtown artists, a rising pop star, and a restaurant full of people who couldn’t quite believe where they were sitting.
