The ancient Greek civilization dates back to 3200 BC; however, Modern Greek history began in 1828 when the country won its freedom from the Ottoman Empire as declared by the Great Powers (Russia, Great Britain, and France). After the independence, a democratic government was formed. Unfortunately, the newly elected president was assassinated, and the Great Powers stepped in and instituted the Kingdom of Greece. These colorized pictures show the sublime landscape, towns, cities, and famous landmarks of Greece in the late 19th century. The photographs were created using the Photochrom process, a technique for applying color to monochrome images with nuance and precision. Vote your favorites, and don’t forget to share.
