The Art of Capturing Personality: William J Hall's Portrait Skills

William James Hall ran his portrait studio, Hall & Co., at 44 Hunter Street in Sydney. While he was also known for marine and animal photography, his portrait work made up a significant part of his practice. The studio offered a full range of photography services, and clients came from across Sydney’s social landscape — from everyday families to well-known public figures.

Hall’s approach to portraiture was deliberate. He gave careful attention to composition and lighting in every sitting. Rather than producing stiff, formulaic results, he worked to draw out the character of each subject. His portraits ranged from formal studies to more relaxed, intimate images — often within the same session.

Among his regular subjects were performers from Sydney’s cabaret and theatre scene. Cabaret artist Peggy Petite sat for Hall on multiple occasions, and the resulting images show a range of poses and expressions that speak to Hall’s ability to work with performers comfortable in front of an audience but perhaps less so in front of a still camera.

Hall’s female subjects made up the largest portion of his portrait archive. Women came to the studio alone, with family, or dressed for specific occasions. Some arrived in everyday dress, others in cocktail gowns or period costumes. A few were actresses sitting for professional portraits. The variety across these sittings reflects the breadth of Hall’s clientele.

Named subjects in the collection give glimpses into specific lives. Mrs Ray Murdoch, née Lottie Andrews, sat for Hall, as did actress Phyllis Baker. These named portraits sit alongside dozens of others where only partial surnames — or none at all — survive, leaving their identities partly unknown.

Male subjects in Hall’s portrait collection were equally varied. Alongside private individuals, the archive includes military men — soldiers photographed during the 1914–1918 war period, naval officers, and at least one naval cadet. These military portraits were a common service offered by studios of the era, with servicemen often sitting for a formal portrait before deployment.

Some of Hall’s subjects were prominent figures. Architect James Johnson Shuttleworth (1853–1929) sat for a formal portrait, as did Frank Albert of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. A man photographed wearing a Masonic apron — possibly surnamed Hooker — represents another layer of Sydney’s social fabric that Hall documented through his lens.

Hall’s military portraits span the Boer War and World War One periods. Soldiers posed in full uniform, their rank and regiment sometimes identifiable from their dress. One image is believed to show a member of the 7th Division Signals. These photographs served both personal and official purposes — records of service, keepsakes for families, and mementos for the men themselves.

The studio’s work also extended to women in Victorian dress, capturing fashions that dated back to the late 1800s. A portrait dated 1890–1910 shows a woman in full Victorian dress, placing Hall’s earliest portrait work firmly in the previous century. His practice bridged two distinct eras of Australian photography.

Hall also photographed subjects in outdoor settings, stepping away from the controlled studio environment. One portrait places a man outside the SCEGS Boatshed at Berrys Bay. Another shows a man photographed on a verandah. These outdoor images show Hall’s flexibility as a photographer, comfortable working in natural light as well as the studio.

Children also appear in the collection. A portrait of a young child with a doll and a young girl in costume show that Hall’s studio catered to families. These sittings required a different set of skills — getting a child to hold still and remain natural in front of the camera was no small task. Hall’s results suggest he managed it well.
