Photo booths were once a fixture in train stations, department stores, amusement parks, and shopping arcades. For just a few cents, anyone could step inside, pull the curtain shut, and sit for a quick series of automatic shots. The machine did the rest — no photographer, no appointment, no fuss. Minutes later, a strip of four or five small images dropped into the tray, still damp from developing.
The earliest automatic photo booths appeared in the 1920s. The Anatol Josepho machine, introduced in New York City in 1925, was a sensation. Lines stretched around the block. People were drawn to the novelty of seeing themselves captured instantly, without the stiff formality of a portrait studio.
Because the booth offered privacy, people let their guard down. Silly faces, exaggerated poses, and genuine laughter filled those little frames. Friends crammed in together. Couples leaned close. The curtain created a small, private world where people felt free to be themselves in front of a camera — something rare at the time.
The black-and-white film used in these early machines gave the photos a soft, slightly grainy look. The lighting was often harsh and direct, casting sharp shadows. These technical quirks, seen as limitations at the time, are exactly what make surviving strips so visually striking today.
Photo booth strips were kept in wallets, tucked into letters, pasted into scrapbooks, and pinned to walls. They were small enough to carry everywhere. For many people, a booth strip was the only candid photo they owned — a genuine, unguarded moment preserved on paper.
Soldiers heading overseas used photo booths before shipping out during World War II. The strips they left behind with loved ones became some of the most treasured keepsakes of the era — small, tangible proof that a person had been there, smiling, alive.
By the 1950s and 1960s, photo booths were everywhere. Teenagers used them constantly. The strips became a way to document friendships and young romance. Fashion and hairstyles shifted decade by decade, turning surviving strips into an unintentional record of changing American style.
The spontaneity of booth photos sets them apart from every other photographic format of their time. Studio portraits required planning. Snapshots needed someone to operate a camera. The booth removed every barrier. You walked in, dropped your coin, and the moment was yours.
Each strip tells a compact story. The first frame might show a careful, composed expression. By the third or fourth, the subject is grinning or laughing — the stiffness gone, the real personality showing through. That progression, visible in just a few inches of paper, is part of what makes these strips so compelling.
Color photo booths became more common from the late 1960s onward, and digital machines began replacing film-based ones in the 1990s. But the earlier black-and-white strips remain the most sought-after by collectors and historians. Their faded tones and aged paper carry a weight that digital prints simply do not.
Thousands of orphaned photo booth strips now circulate through flea markets, antique shops, and online auction sites. The people in them are unnamed and often unidentifiable. Yet their expressions — joy, mischief, affection, goofiness — are entirely familiar.
What survives in these strips is not just a face or a fashion. It’s the proof that people in every decade found ways to laugh together, to hold on to someone they cared about, and to mark a moment worth remembering — all for the price of a coin.
