Long before Betty White became one of television’s most recognized faces, she was already living by a simple priority: her dogs came first. The organizations she supported spanned a wide range of causes. Betty lent her name and time to the African Wildlife Foundation, which focuses on conservation across the African continent. She was also involved with Actors & Others for Animals, a group that works to reduce animal suffering and promote adoption. Each organization represented a different dimension of her commitment — from domestic pets to wild animals thousands of miles away.
On October 1, 2011, Betty hosted the American Humane Hero Dog Awards ceremony at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. The annual event honors dogs that have made extraordinary contributions — military dogs, therapy dogs, service dogs, and shelter dogs among them. Betty hosting the ceremony was a natural fit; she had spent decades advocating for exactly the values the event celebrated.
