During World War II, German engineers produced some of the most unusual weapons ever built. Among them was the Krummlauf — a name that simply means “curved barrel” in German. It was a bent barrel attachment designed for the Sturmgewehr 44, better known as the STG44 assault rifle. The goal was straightforward: let a soldier fire at an enemy without stepping out from behind cover.

The idea behind the Krummlauf challenged one of the most basic facts about firearms — bullets travel in straight lines. By bending the barrel itself, German engineers forced the bullet to follow a curved path. The attachment came in two versions: one bent at 30 degrees and another at 45 degrees. Each angle served a different tactical purpose, though both were designed to keep the shooter out of the line of enemy fire.

Aiming a curved barrel is not something a soldier can do by looking down a standard iron sight. German engineers solved this by pairing the Krummlauf with a periscope sighting device. The shooter could observe the target through the periscope while keeping their entire body hidden behind a wall, inside a trench, or within an armored vehicle. In controlled tests, a skilled marksman using this setup could hit a 35×35 cm square target from 100 meters away.

The accuracy results were promising, but the hardware told a different story. The curved barrel had an extremely short service life. The 30-degree version could handle roughly 300 rounds before the metal gave out and the barrel broke apart. The 45-degree version was even more fragile, lasting only about 160 rounds. The tight bend placed enormous stress on the barrel with every single shot fired.

The bullets themselves suffered too. Forcing a projectile through a sharp curve shattered many rounds into fragments before they even left the muzzle. Instead of a single aimed shot, the weapon sprayed bullet fragments in a pattern closer to a shotgun blast. This was a serious problem for a rifle meant to deliver accurate, aimed fire.

Engineers tried to reduce the pressure inside the barrel by drilling small vents into it. The idea was to bleed off excess gas before it could push the bullet too violently through the bend. The vents did lower the velocity and reduced some of the fragmentation, but they did not extend the barrel’s lifespan in any meaningful way. They also introduced a new hazard: the hot, high-pressure gases that escaped through the vents blew directly back toward the shooter’s face.

Despite these well-documented problems, the German military placed an order for around 20,000 STG44 Krummlauf units. The gap between that number and what actually reached the front lines tells the real story. Only 500 units were ever deployed in combat.

One of the primary uses planned for the Krummlauf was inside armored vehicles and tanks. Mounting the weapon on the interior of a vehicle allowed the crew to fire in a full 360-degree arc around the vehicle without opening a hatch or exposing themselves to enemy fire. A tank crew member could engage infantry attacking from any direction while remaining fully protected by the vehicle’s armor.

The concept made tactical sense on paper. Infantry soldiers armed with anti-tank weapons posed a serious threat to armored vehicles, especially in close-quarters urban fighting. A weapon that could cover blind spots around a tank without requiring any crewmember to expose themselves addressed a real battlefield problem. The Krummlauf was one direct attempt to solve it.

The STG44 itself was already a significant weapon. It is widely recognized as one of the first true assault rifles ever produced, and it influenced firearm design for decades after the war. Attaching the Krummlauf transformed this already capable rifle into something far stranger — a weapon that defied conventional expectations of how a gun should work.

The Krummlauf stands as one of WWII’s clearest examples of an idea that was technically achievable but practically flawed. The engineering required to bend a bullet’s path was real and functional.
