When Brigitte Bardot Met Pablo Picasso at His Studio Near Cannes in 1956

In the summer of 1956, the 9th Cannes Film Festival brought a wave of international stars to the French Riviera. Brigitte Bardot, just 21 years old, was among them — already a widely recognized sex symbol with a rapidly growing film career.

While the festival drew crowds to Cannes, Pablo Picasso, 74, was working nearby at his studio inside Villa La Californie. He was one of the most celebrated artists alive, known above all for pioneering Cubism.

Bardot’s reason for seeking out Picasso was connected to a film. Henri-Georges Clouzot’s documentary, *The Mystery of Picasso*, was screening at Cannes that year. It gave viewers a rare look at Picasso’s creative process, and it left Bardot wanting to meet the man himself.

LIFE magazine sent photographer Jerome Brierre to document the encounter. The meeting took place inside Picasso’s studio — a space packed with color, canvases, and works in progress.

Bardot arrived with clear enthusiasm. She had hoped, among other things, to have her portrait painted by Picasso. But their personalities pulled in different directions. Bardot was bold and confident; Picasso tended to gravitate toward quieter, more reserved women as his muses.

Picasso never painted Bardot. The two did not connect in the way an artist connects with a muse. He was absorbed in other projects, and Bardot did not spark his creative interest despite her fame and striking presence.

One notable detail emerged from the visit. Lydia Corbett, a frequent model for Picasso, was present at Cannes during that period. Corbett had a blonde ponytail and a gentle, soft manner. Bardot reportedly admired her look and adopted it for herself.
