What Alexandria, Virginia looked like in the 1970s

The first settlement in Alexandria, Virginia, dates back more than 10,000 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the United States. This charming city is filled with waterfront homes along the Potomac River, a rich history, and friendly people. Alexandria is just a few miles from Washington, DC, and it is also home to some of the country’s most coveted suburban real estate. Alexandria was incorporated as a city in 1749. Alexandria was only the third US city to be designated as a national historic district in 1949.

Alexandria offers some of the country’s best historical, cultural, and entertainment attractions. There are a number of historical and architectural treasures here, including the George Washington Masonic National Memorial, a 17-foot bronze statue of the country’s first president. George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate is just nine miles away. One of the world’s largest bronze statues can be found in Arlington, adjacent to the Marine Corps War Memorial.

These stunning vintage photos show Alexandria, Virginia, during the 1970s. At the beginning of the 1970s, the population of Alexandria, Virginia, was around 110,927, and the city was growing. The city consolidated all high school students into T.C. Williams High School in 1971. The same year, Herman Boone was hired to coach the football team, which won the state championship and came in second in the national championship. Denzel Washington played Boone in the 2000 film Remember the Titans. Nora Lamborne and Beverly Beidler became the first women elected to the city council in 1973.
