Davorin Dinić is a photographer and digital artist from Niš, Serbia. His project is straightforward but deeply striking: he tracked down some of the oldest photographs ever taken of his hometown, returned to those exact spots, and re-photographed them from the same angles. Then he merged the old and new images into a single frame.
The result is a split-second collision between two eras. Horse-drawn carts share a frame with modern cars. Cobblestone streets bleed into asphalt. Faded sepia tones meet sharp digital color. Each image asks you to look twice before you fully understand what you’re seeing.
Dinić described the goal of the project in his own words: “These photos take us back in time as well as bring the past to us, to our everyday surroundings. They deliver a strong emotional impact and raise questions about our awareness of the beauty of the cities we live in.”
Getting the angles right was a critical part of the process. Dinić had to stand in the exact position the original photographer stood — sometimes in the middle of a busy road, sometimes against a wall that no longer exists. The precision makes the merges feel seamless.
Niš is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans, with a history stretching back to Roman times. Walking its streets today, much of that age is invisible beneath modern storefronts and renovated facades. Dinić’s work peels that layer back.
Some of the merged images show buildings that are still standing, largely unchanged after a century. Others reveal dramatic shifts — entire blocks replaced, landmarks demolished, wide boulevards built over narrow alleyways.
The clothing in the old photographs does a lot of work. Long coats, hats, and formal dress from decades past stand next to people in jeans and sneakers. The contrast is jarring and human at the same time.
Beyond aesthetics, the project is a record. Old photographs of Serbian cities are rare and often poorly preserved. By anchoring them to specific, identifiable modern locations, Dinić gives historians and locals a reliable visual reference for what these streets once looked like.
The streets of Niš have absorbed decades of political change, war, rebuilding, and growth. These images don’t explain that history — they show it in a single glance.
