What Battersea, London looked like in the 1980s Through Fabulous Photos by Peter Marshall

Battersea is an area along the south bank of the River Thames in the London borough of Wandsworth. Road and rail bridges stretch over the Thames to connect Kensington and Chelsea with Battersea. It was the site of the production of Battersea enamelware in the mid-18th century; its riverside park is now defunct. Battersea was once a wilderness of sheds, factories, gasholders, and warehouses in the 1980s. Before the US embassy relocated from Grosvenor Square in Mayfair to Nine Elms, the area was a wasteland.

Photographer Peter Marshall photographed Battersea in the 1980s. He captured streets, landmarks and everyday life.
