Manchester in the mid-1970s was a city defined by football. On matchdays, the streets filled with supporters in scarves and terrace wear, long before replica shirts became standard. A photography project during the 1976–77 season set out to document these fans up close — not the players, not the stadiums, but the people who showed up every week.
The photos capture Manchester City and Manchester United fans side by side. Sky blue scarves and red-and-white rosettes appear throughout, marking fierce tribal loyalties. Yet the images also reveal a shared culture. These were working-class men, women, and children from the same streets, the same pubs, the same neighborhoods.
Young fans feature heavily. A boy grins beneath a City scarf nearly as big as he is. Groups of mates stand arm in arm, faces alive with pre-match energy. The expressions are unguarded — no one is posing for a brand or a camera phone.
The 1976–77 season was a significant one. Manchester United, under Tommy Docherty, won the FA Cup that year. City were competing hard in the First Division. Tensions between the two sets of supporters ran high, making the candid warmth in several of these photos all the more striking.
The fashion is unmistakably 1970s — wide lapels, platform shoes, and patterned knitwear. These details root the images firmly in their era and give them the feel of a social document as much as a sports archive.
Terrace culture in this period was raw and communal. Fans stood, not sat. They packed in tightly, voices loud, emotions high. These photographs preserve a version of matchday Manchester that no longer exists in quite the same form.
