A child peers through a group of people among the crowd of approximately 20,000 people who had gathered to witness the public hanging of Rainey Bethea in Owensboro, Kentucky, 14th August 1936.

Errors made in the Bethea execution embarrassed members of the Kentucky legislature resulting in Bethea becoming the last person to be publicly executed in the United States.
