New York always held a dominant position in the economy of America. In 1884, nearly 70% of U.S. imports came through New York. However, the increase in immigrants, which were started with refugees from the Irish potato famine, impacted New York’s economy. Between 1855 and 1890, an estimated 8 million immigrants passed through Castle Clinton at Battery Park in Manhattan. Mass overcrowding in Lower Manhattan facilitated the spread of yellow fever, cholera, and tuberculosis.
